Welcome to our little piece of the internet here at Schoolhouse Shakeup. Why the name? You see the building we live in was once a rural country school before all of the country schools were consolidated in our area . In fact, my husband’s great aunts and uncles and a few other relatives attended school in our house and remember what it was like before the bedroom walls were built on the first floor. Features of the building that really drew us to this house were the huge windows on the first floor and the amazing room in the basement. And we have been “shaking” it up. Corny, I know, but that’s how we roll.
We bought our humble abode in 2008 just a few weeks before our wedding. To say it was a fixer upper is a bit of an understatement. There isn’t one surface we haven’t touched! When our parents first took a look at our proud, new purchase they didn’t exactly share our excitement. I’m sure they thought we wasted our money. But over the past years, we have truly made it our own. And can truly call this old schoolhouse our home. It was during fixing up our house I realized I needed an outlet to share my dreams of home projects. There were times when I would talk to Adam about a cool idea I had and his eyes would glaze over thinking about how much it would cost. And that’s how this blog came to be. Plus with friends and family spread out, this blog is a way we can share with the people we love what’s going on in our lives. The good, the bad, the whatever.
Ironically, my husband and I are both teachers. Adam is a Math and Science teacher and I’m an elementary teacher. Maybe that’s why we were drawn to our house? Definitely a God thing. That’s for sure. We truly enjoy our simple living especially when it means we can go a mile down the road and get farm fresh eggs from my in-laws along with other fresh produce. That’s the life!
Our lives don’t always revolve around our house. With our home being located in rural Kansas,we couldn’t feel more at home anywhere else. My family is 30 minutes away and Adam’s is down the road. Family plays a large role in our lives and we enjoy spending what little free time we have with our siblings and their little ones. Our niece and two nephews are very special to us and we love spoiling them every chance we get. So, it’s no surprise that you’ll see them here on the blog every once in a while. We may be biased, but we do think we have the cutest niece and nephews in these here parts. 🙂
Along with our family, faith plays a large part in our marriage and our life. While we strive everyday to follow His word, we rely on Him daily. Over the last few years, if hadn’t relied on him daily our marriage would not be what it is. During the last six years we have unfortunately lost our two children. For any couple (or individual for that matter) who has gone through a similar situation, this is not an easy journey to be on. We have had our ups and downs, but we know we are loved and God is good. If you would like to read posts one how we have experienced this journey you can click here, here, and here.
We invite you to follow along with us on this journey of home repair, family life, and faith!
